Kinki Sharyo #6067

17 february 2010 - Cairo, King Hussain Bin Talal square. A group of strangely acting tourists takes pictures of a route 33 tram and of the pointsman at the junction, who resides in his little hut by the junction and takes his naps on a Tatra K5AR seat. That was probably the only trace of the tatras we could see in all of Cairo.

17 february 2010 - Cairo, El Nozha. As part of the "powdering the dead guy" exercise, some vehicles running between Heliopolis and Ramses Square have been repainted in CTA livery. Sadly - the interiors of the vehicles are still in a terrible condition as David's photos show.

21 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Midan el Tahrir. 121+122. A non-pantograph set at the war memorial in central Alexandria. Trams also ran from here inland, but this short link was closed a few years ago, as traffic conditions made progress along the street almost impossible. In the background, a Chinese double-deck bus runs along the sea front.

17 february 2010 - Cairo, Kulliet Al-Banat. The trams that run as the Heliopolis metro have a different paint scheme than the 'city' cars. They also have slightly different front designs, soft seats and a film with destinations written on it, rather than boards with route numbers. Due to our lack of language skills riding these was a bit of a lottery, although I think the routes are marked by colours. The tram in the picture is approaching a junction with the branch lines to El Nasr and Abbasiya, which were quite recently closed down due to the construction of the third metro line.

Kinki Sharyo #1012

17 february 2010 - Cairo, Midan Ramsis. We are now at Cairo's main public transport hub - we've got the central Ramses railway station, both metro lines and the terminus of the Empain-built tram line to Heliopolis. The route runs from here towards the north-east on a fully segregated alignment till Midan Roxy, where it joins the road network running in the middle of dual carriageways. Despite the tracks being absolutely catastrophic, the trams can still manage around 40km/h on a good day, and with a little good will and money this could be a great start of a Stadtbahn-type network. Even the natives refer to this line as metro. Sadly, according to our source at the CTA, upon the opening of the 'real' metro line 3, the Cairo trams are to disappear...

Hitachi / SEMAF #4283

16 february 2010 - Cairo, El Matariya. This terminus is the most important point on the tramway network, because here is where most of the routes end. This is also one end of a 2km long access track to Port Said depot, which the trams sometimes need to traverse against the traffic flow. This also used to be a border point between the city and Heliopolis trams - the Heliopolis trams ended here, whereas the city trams ended 100m away, on the other side of the square. Initially the two weren't even connected - the connection was built when both networks were united under the auspices of the CTA.

Hitachi / SEMAF #4261

16 february 2010 - Cairo, Midan Al-Sayyid Al-Mirghani. Cairo used to have two tram networks and a trolleybus network. The city centre network used to belong to the CTA, whereas the network in Heliopolis was managed by the company formed by Baron Empain. Somewhere along the way the CTA took over the entire network, but the differences in vehicle types are easily seen. This is probably one of the newest tram vehicles in Cairo - a result of the cooperation between Toshiba and Hitachi - as it rumbles past a square in Heliopolis.

16 february 2010 - Cairo, Midan Nady Al-Zubbat. After failed negotiations between Dave and a CTA representative about letting us into the depot, we asked our driver to deposit us in Heliopolis in order to take our first pictures of the capital's trams. And here a few words of explanation are in order: Heliopolis is a city founded by Edouard Louis Joseph, Baron Empain - a Belgian magnate, whom we would today call a developer. The good Baron bought around 25 sq km east of Cairo and connected them with a suburban tram to the city centre (of course the track gauge was 1000mm just like the Vicinales of his native Belgium). Here he started building luxury residences, a gigantic hotel (today it is the presidential palace) and a leisure park. Heliopolis is criss-crossed by such wide avenues with trams running in the median strip. Here is our first picture of a Cairo tram.

Miscellaneous 4-axle tram

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Mustafa Kamel. Someone forgot to tell the builders of this amazing 'fantasy' tram when to stop. Look closely, and you will see that the middle part is an old 4-wheel tram body, which has been mounted on a long bogie trailer underframe (possibly from one of the original Ramleh line double-deckers). Then more and more parts have been added....... I just love the verandah upstairs. I'd like to charter this tram and ride along up here whilst English tea and cucumber sandwiches are served by a white-coated waiter, as 1920s jazz music is played on an old gramophone.

Énergie Cairo #112

16 february 2010 - Giza (EG) - Media City. A wooden tram in a wooden street. All the buildings are totally false - one of several purpose-built film sets built here in the desert near Cairo. The electric tramway here was specially created a few years ago as part of an area representing old Alexandria. It uses this typical 1930s Belgian-built tram from Cairo, which is in working order (or was, until we broke it). It's one of the very few historic trams left in Egypt.

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Chatby. One of the batch of Kinki Sharyo tram sets modified to run direct from the city along the Ramleh interurban - two trolley poles and two pantographs. The trolley pole will be raised at Place Zaghloul tram station for the run into the city streets.

17 february 2010 - Helwan, Omar Ibn Abd El Aziz street. And so ends our little trip around Helwan. On our way from the depot we talked our friendly driver into going onto the other branch, but after about a kilometre from the junction he gave up saying something's not right further ahead. We therefore decided to go back to the centre of Helwan, arranging an impromptu tram driver's course. We all passed, but airbrakes are definitely not my thing - I nearly crashed into a minibus at a crossing :)

Kinki Sharyo #6103

17 february 2010 - Helwan, tram depot. The driver organised an impromptu parade in front of the tram depot, which was such a state secret that we weren't allowed to enter.... Sadly, in order to get the vehicles side by side, car 6103 had to use the crossover outside the gate. I can't honestly remember whether the catenary above the crossover was sagging badly or whether it was there at all, but you can see the result of that manoeuvre. After the old banger in the EMPC film studios, this was the second car in Egypt to be broken in our honour...

17 february 2010 - Helwan, tram depot. To continue our little story from yesterday - the friendly tram driver told us that he's just leaving the depot to make a run to Helwan. He disappeared inside the shed and brought out another train for us, including the crew (a conductor in each car). But he didn't stop there...

Ganz / Düwag #1213

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Egyptian tram interiors (4) - the conductor's desk on a Ganz car. This is rarely used - except to prepare the conductor's lunch...... In Egypt, one car of a two or three car tram set is always reserved for women.

Kinki Sharyo #6130

17 february 2010 - Helwan, tram depot. Despite the fact, that the system is in a terrible state, the security of the depot is compromised by two groups - scrap metal hunters and tram fans from Europe... After walking 3km to the tram depot, some guy appeared out of nowhere. He spoke decent English and we asked him whether he could get us past the guys at the gate. Sadly - that didn't work. Instead, we got to know a very nice tram driver, who led us to a local shop where we could buy water. While other group members were giving away free English lessons, I strayed aside and took this shot through the fence. Next to the scrapyard pictured, there was a few tens of trams standing in the shed. Generally speaking, there were enough trams in the depots to guarantee a 7.5 minute frequency on both routes. Sadly - the number of cars working on this day was around 5 or so, and the running frequency was determined by the mood of the depot crew.

Kinki Sharyo #6006

17 february 2010 - Helwan, terminus El Tabbin. As you can see by the positioning of the vehicle, the tracks in Helwan haven't seen a tampering machine since they were built in 1981. We are standing near the Nile, next to a metallurgical institute - the tram probably used to carry many of its workers. Sadly, I don't know what we did to piss off the crew of the tram, but they left before we had a chance to take pictures of the tram and jump back on board for the return journey. We did the three kilometres back to the depot on foot. Of course with the exception of Dave, who always does his own thing...

17 february 2010 - Helwan, El Sarf El Sehy. As we were the only passengers on board car number 6006, we asked the crew to stop for photos a few times along the way. Here the tram has already left the centre of Helwan and has stopped next to the depot gates, located amongst fields.

17 february 2010 - Helwan, Emtedad Atef El Barquqi. There is a vegetable and fruit market on this street, alongside the tracks. As the frequency of the tram is defined by a complex interaction of prayer times, accidents, vehicle condition and - last but not least - the mood of the drivers, the rubbish from the market is thrown straight onto the tracks. On this momentous occasion of a tram passing along the street, some workers got to work shovelling the rubbish from the tracks to let the tram get through. I'd rather not mention the smell... All in all, if you ever wondered what hell for trams looks like - it is in Helwan...

Hitachi / SEMAF #4265

18 february 2010 - Cairo (EG) - el Mataria. In addition to their Kinki Sharyo trams, Cairo has a large batch of these Japanese-built Hitachi cars. Here at el Mataria, all remaining Cairo city lines terminate before returning to Heliopolis by various routes. 4265 + 4266 have just come along the connecting track from Port Suez depot (the only one remaining on CTA city lines) along nearly 2km of single track laid in the 'wrong' lane of a busy dual carriageway - great fun in the crazy Cairo traffic! Only around seventeen city tram sets are now turned out each day, with the rest of the Heliopolis service being formed of proper 'interurban' style trams. Soon, another new metro line will open and these remaining ex-city lines will disappear.

Kinki Sharyo #6001

18 february 2010 - Cairo (EG) - el Mataria. Cairo once had an extensive tram network, but this has almost disappeared as replacement heavy metro lines take over. A casual visitor to the city is unlikely to ever see a Cairo tram, which now only run into Heliopolis and are fully integrated with the once-separate suburban tramways there. This is the last remaining line served exclusively by city trams (and even this has been cut back). Egyptian 'standard' Kinki Sharyo cars 6001 + 6002 have recently received a repaint.

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG)- Midan Zaghloul. The impressive Ramleh lines tram station, with three interurban trains ready to depart along the line behind the photographer - they wlll leave at three or four minute intervals. Blue trams always terminate here, but the yellow tram on the right has come from the city lines and switched from trolley pole to pantograph - it will then follow the blue trams to a point part-way along the interurban route, to provide a 'through' service at no additional fare. Tram set 113+114+115 is the only one in a new, revised colour scheme.

Énergie Cairo #112

16 february 2010 - Egypt Media Production City (EMPC), 6th of October City, Egypt. In 1979 the erstwhile president Anwar Sadat decreed the creation of a new city in the desert off Giza. The 'city' consists mainly of different kinds of universities, but also houses one of the world's largest film studios. The EMPC holds many different kinds of film locations, including this Egyptian street from the first half of the 20th Century. It comes complete with fake houses, a fake mosque and 200m of tram track, including this ex-Cairo tram of Belgian origin. The car is in an abysmal condition - the first notch is missing, the body is bent like an EU-regulations banana, and the brakes locked themselves when we rode it. In the picture the helper of the driver is reversing the trolley pole at the southern end of the line. The manufacturer's plate of this tram looks something like this: http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/4650/2552.jpg

Ganz / Düwag #1207

21 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Nariman. #1207+#1208. The newest trams on the Alexandria city lines are thirty of these attractive Hungarian Ganz cars, with bogies by Düwag, which run in back-to-back coupled pairs. These trams are normally seen only on lines in the southern suburbs and not in the city centre.

Duewag GT6 #888

21 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Ras el Tin. A typical narrow street in one of the market areas of Alexandria. The city trams make very slow progress here against a tide of people, cars minibuses and horse-drawn vehicles. These Düwags have run for almost fifty years and some look a bit 'tired', but they still work OK. Note the trolley pole and trolley wheel - very unusual for a Düwag.

16 february 2010 - Helwan (Egypt). Helwan has a large fleet of these 1980s, single-ended Japanese-built trams, very similar in design to Cairo and Heliopolis tramways. Here the similarity ends, however - Cairo and Heliopolis trams, although well worn, are at least kept in reasonably good condition. Most Helwan trams never leave the depot, I suspect. Despite being part of CTA Cairo, everything at Helwan is in an appalling state of repair - you can see here that, maybe twenty years ago, this was a fine, modern system with raised platforms, passenger shelters and high-speed catenary suspension for the overhead wires. It isn't vandalism that has caused this - just neglect. A decent light rail system left to rot - what a waste!

Jinling JLY6101SA #2

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Ras el Tin. A picture for our new bus fans - some TWB debuts, I'm sure, but language translation becomes difficult. This smart double decker comes from the Jinling factory in China and is one of a small fleet operating a 'sea front' service in Alexandria. Is this the first one we have seen? Apart from some tourist Neoplan coaches, we saw no other double-deck buses anywhere.

20 february 2010 - Alexandria (Egypt) - Mustafa Kamel. Blue Alexandria trams operate on the Ramleh interurban lines, which connect with the orange cars of the city system but which are all on private track. A very intensive service of permanently-coupled, three car tram sets leaves the city every few minutes. The big attraction is, of course, these double-deck trams, once very common in the UK but now found only in Blackpool and Hong Kong. Lovely!

Duewag GT6 #869

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - El Central (railway station). Alexandria has both city and interurban trams - this is one of 89 ex-Copenhagen Düwags that have been here since the 1970s. Although the interurban lines run on private tracks, many market areas like this cause much delay to the city trams. It is even possible to see places where the market is moved back, away from the tram tracks, until a tram has passed by!

Kinki Sharyo #6006

17 february 2010 - Helwan (Egypt) - El Harery Street. The Helwan tramway was built in 1981 and looks like it has had no maintenance or repairs since then, so is now slowly dying. Maybe one tram every THREE HOURS runs (usually empty) along the shaky tracks on two lines crossing the city. More pictures soon!
