Duewag GT6 #874

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Masr. A Düwag car heads a long line of similar trams through the central market. These trams have had a very long and hard life, but are still being renovated (and often completely rebuilt) in the company’s workshops. Of the original 100 cars brought here when the Copenhagen system closed in 1968, no less than 97 are still active. No two trams are now exactly the same.

Kinki Sharyo Alexandria #1102

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Midan el Tahrir. A few of the Alexandria Kinki Sharyo trams are dual-equipped with both pantograph and trolley pole, as seen here, so they can run through the city (trolley pole) and out on the Ramleh interurban, by changing current collectors at the Ramleh line terminus. This allows people from the city to travel across the system boundary by paying just one fare.

Duewag GT6 #803

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt – el Central. Find the tram! Who would wish to be a tram driver in Egyptian road conditions? With much ringing of its warning bell, one of the fleet of fifty year old, ex-Copenhagen Düwag cars comes creeping through the central market area from the main railway station.

Kinki Sharyo DD #218

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt – Mustafa Kamel. One of the small batch of double-deck trailers used on the Ramleh interurban – one of the only three places where double deck trams can now be found in normal service (and, of these, Blackpool is now doubtful until it is seen how their new fleet of trams is employed). The majestic Ramleh double-deckers are always used in driving trailer-motor-driving trailer sets, with one double-decker facing towards Alexandria, as is the case here, where two separate routes into the city meet. As this car is at the front of the set, it is reserved for women passengers.

Énergie Cairo #112

16 february 2010 - Egypt – Al Giza, Media City. The preserved, ex-Cairo four-wheeler in action along the short tram line laid within this vast film studio complex, recreating a street in old Alexandria. This tram is a miraculous survivor, although it lives out of doors and the bodywork is becoming a little ‘tired’ from long exposure to the wind and sun in this desert area.

Eltramco Ramzes I #108206

10 september 2010 - Kair.

Kinki Sharyo Cairo #4084

16 february 2010 - al Qahira (EG) - el Mataria. The Cairo city tramway is now reduced to this short line to a busy metro station and market district - all other trams that remain run only within Heliopolis city or on the Heliopolis-Cairo interurban line. El Mataria terminus is not very attractive, being sited in the centre of a busy road and fully enclosed by these huge fences. As everywhere, local kids soon learn how they can travel for free.....

Kinki Sharyo #1012

17 february 2010 - al Qahira (EG) - Midan Ramses. The Heliopolis interurbans once ran to a terminal on the banks of the River Nile but now end at this single platform alongside the main Cairo railway station, where routes leave for various destinations in Heliopolis. The routes are supposed to be colour-coded by destination, but I saw little evidence of any signs. This is a normal three-car motor+non-driving motor+motor train.

Hitachi / SEMAF #4225

16 february 2010 - Heliopolis (EG) - Midan al Sayyid al Mirghani. Heliopolis was conceived and built as a 'garden city' away from the crowded centre of Cairo, with fine buildings and wide boulevards, often including tram tracks. This is one of the main east-west roads through the city, carrying a mix of Cairo to Heliopolis interurbans and purely local routes operated by these ex-Cairo city trams.

Hitachi / SEMAF #4261

16 february 2010 - Heliopolis (EG) - Midan al Sayyid al Mirghani. Cairo city tramways Hitachi cars #4261 and #4262 on a local service in Heliopolis. The Heliopolis system is now fully integrated with Cairo, although these ex-city trams now work only a handful of remaining former Cairo routes and don't run into central Cairo.

Kinki Sharyo #6006

17 february 2010 - Helwan (EG) - El Harery Street. You can see from this photo that this was a showpiece in the 1980s - a fast, well-equipped light railway. Now, after thirty years of total neglect, it just struggles to survive and really can't last much longer.

Kinki Sharyo #6006

17 february 2010 - Helwan (EG) - Omar ibn Abd el Aziz Street. OK, so you can see only a very small part of the tram in this photo - but it's hard to drive it and take photos at the same time! Note the driver's lunch by the windscreen - a piece of flat bread, which all workmen seem to carry with them - and the taxi abandoned on the other track (which may not have to move for an hour or so, when the next tram comes along!).

Kinki Sharyo #6133

17 february 2010 - Helwan (EG) - Omar ibn Abd el Aziz Street. One of the battered and bruised Kinki Sharyo cars that maintain some sort of tram service in this city south of Cairo - surely the most decrepit and derelict working tramway in the world?

20 february 2010 - Al-Iskandariyya (Alexandria) (EG) - depot/zajezdnia Moharam Bey. This is one of two general-purpose works vehicles bought by APTA to replace an amazing collection of old works trams, sadly all gone. I was just too late, as usual.....

Kinki Sharyo Alexandria #126

21 february 2010 - Al-Iskandariyya (Alexandria) (EG) - Sidi Khalifa Street. Passing one of the finest mosques in Alexandria - note that this tram has no pantograph, just trolley pole.

Jinling JLY6110SB #1

21 february 2010 - Al-Iskandariyya (Alexandria) (EG) - Ras-el-Tin. Looking a little out of place here, one of the big Chinese double-deckers that run along Alexandria sea front. Maybe one day they will discover the traditional English seaside open-topper?

Kinki Sharyo DD #221

19 february 2010 - Al-Iskandariyya (Alexandria) (EG) - el Shatby. One of the majestic double-deckers heading for Ramleh in the city centre.

Duewag GT6 #809

21 february 2010 - Al-Iskandariyya (Alexandria) (EG) - Salat el-Dein. No two window arrangements are the same on these trams, a result of much rebuilding over their fifty years of service.

Duewag GT6 #862

21 february 2010 - Al-Iskandariyya (Alexandria) (EG) - Salat el-Dein. This funny little building is probably an electricity sub-station. The tram tracks loop around it.

Duewag GT6 #875

21 february 2010 - Al-Iskandariyya (Alexandria) (EG) - Salat el-Dein. The tramway company still carries out full overhauls of these trams, right down to a bare bodyshell if necessary, so they should be OK for several more years in service.

Duewag GT6 #891

21 february 2010 - Al-Iskandariyya (Alexandria) (EG) - Salat El-Dein. #891 again, in a different part of the city. For some reason, this street was lined with soldiers, who warned me not to take any photos. I don't understand Arabic :-)

Duewag GT6 #891

21 february 2010 - Al-Iskandariyya (Alexandria) (EG). Another look at the lovely Düwags of Alexandria - born 50 years ago and still going strong. How many of today's trams and buses will still be in front-line passenger service in 2060?

Kinki Sharyo DD #209

19 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - El Nasr (Victoria). The eastern terminus of the Ramleh interurban line is here, opposite a suburban railway station. All Rameh line trams are formed of three cars and the double deck cars run only on about 10% of trains, always at the city end. As the front tram in every set is reserved for women, tram enthusiasts can only travel upstairs in one direction, and sometimes need to wait quite a long time to do so (unless you're a woman!).

Kinki Sharyo Alexandria #121

21 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - Ramleh Station. A Kinki Sharyo city tram set waits at the interurban station, with one of the main mosques in the background and an interurban train approaching. These trolley-pole equipped city trams can't go any further, as the interurban line uses only pantographs.

Duewag GT6 #880

21 february 2010 - Alexandria (EG) - St Catherines. Approaching the in-town terminus of the Karmouz route, trams must negotiate this very narrow alley. then cross an area where many private minibuses wait. Traffic in this area is usually chaotic.

Kinki Sharyo #6068

16 february 2010 - Heliopolis (EG). Another Cairo city line (Line 12) likely to disappear quite soon, when another Metro line is opened. Although the track here looks to be in quite good condition, many of the rails are stamped "Krupp 1897", so they date from the very first Cairo tramways - how scary is that?

Hitachi / SEMAF #4225

16 february 2010 - Heliopolis (EG) - Al-Sayyid-Al-Mirghani. Although this series of trams have Hitachi builders plates, it seems likely they were assembled locally from Japanese parts. This street (like many in Cairo) has a big military building, so photos are forbidden. Luckily, we couldn't read the notices (all in Arabic)!

Kinki Sharyo #6034

16 february 2010 - Heliopolis (EG) - Atef el Sadat Square. Cairo city tram set 6034+6066 crosses Heliopolis beneath one of the road flyovers the Egyptians love so much. Line 12 is one of the few remaining Cairo city lines (which now only run in Heliopolis) and may soon disappear, leaving just interurban lines on these tracks.

Kinki Sharyo #1030

18 february 2010 - Heliopolis (EG) – Roxy. This is the most important junction on the Heliopolis interurban system, where lines to various parts of the city join up for the run into Cairo. The elevated building on the right is a rare tram signal box. Cars 1030+1028 are leaving on a Cairo service – note the ‘passenger’ on the back. The trams travel quite fast on this section and the track is bumpy, so this seems a fairly dangerous way to avoid buying a ticket (which by Western standards are ridiculously cheap).

Énergie Cairo #112

16 february 2010 - Giza (EG) – Media City. Inside Cairo tram #112. The separate front compartment would have been for ladies only. The city tramway still has a similar tram stored in their depot, but it doesn’t appear to come out and I only saw it from a distance. These trams were used right up until the early 1980s.

Énergie Cairo #112

16 february 2010 - Giza (EG) – Media City. All the buildings here are just a film set – you can tell they aren’t real because the streets are clean! This is how the city of Alexandria looked in the 1920s.

Énergie Cairo #112

16 february 2010 - Giza (EG) – Media City. The old 1920s tram that operates on the private line at the Media City film studios, situated in the desert near Cairo. Painted to resemble an Alexandria tram, it was built by Societe Anonyme de Energie in Marcinelle, Belgium and worked its whole life in Cairo. The fleet number is probably fictitious.

Kinki Sharyo #6133

17 february 2010 - Helwan (EG) – El Galel. It seemed that this tram set was brought out specially from the depot, so that the European visitors could all try their hand at tram driving! Typically in Helwan, no local passengers got on or off. We struggled along on very low power (and it seemed with a faulty controller) to this point on the line to the east of the city, where a slight gradient was too much for the tram to continue. Note the luxurious café on the left!

Kinki Sharyo #6006

17 february 2010 - Helwan (EG) – The Agricultural Road, Al Tibeen. A rare section of proper street running in Helwan. The car has just been abandoned on the track, as the driver was obviously not expecting a tram to come along – understandable, as there doesn’t seem to be any timetable and nothing runs for hours at a time! The customary Egyptian drivers’ shouting match is about to commence……….

Kinki Sharyo #6134

17 february 2010 - Helwan (EG) – El Saif El Sehy. An amazing sight in Helwan – TWO tram sets on the line at the same time! In actual fact, 6134+6133 were just sitting there with the crew taking a little siesta, while 6006+6005 in the distance were heading for the southern terminus. Note the usual state of dereliction everywhere.

Kinki Sharyo #6006

17 february 2010 - Helwan (EG) – El Teram, Al Tibeen. The southern terminus of the Helwan tram system is here behind a steelworks. When we visited, nothing moved, and the terminus tracks themselves looked totally derelict. A tram does come here occasionally, though – we arrived with this one and I took this picture of the conductor. The tram then suddenly drove off back towards the city, leaving us standing there with a 3km trek to the depot – thanks, guys………
