CAM Elevador da Bica #2

26 july 2010 - Lisbon, Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo. Silvered with plastic plates wagon number 2, sitting on the upper station. On the left there's a litttle shoemaker's shop - the vendor is so "polite" that the best thing to do is even not to look into his "shed".

Carris Remodelado #545

26 july 2010 - Lisbon; this is the typical Alfama - Cathedral in the background, narrow street made of cobble stone and little yellow trammie climbing the hills. Photo taken from the rear part of Remodelado #9 (one of the red ones) - yellow #545 was rolling behind it through Alfama and Grac,a up to the tram loop next to the Estrela Basilica.

Carris St. Louis #2

19 july 2010 - Lisbon, Santo Amaro Depot. That day little saloon tram St. Louis #2 was in museum service - it ran to the southern part of the depot, where the tram exposition is located. The motorman just stopped here, turned the trolley pole and waited for next guests to come. Above the depot we can see the immense miniature of the Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco) - The 25. April's Bridge.

CAM Elevador da Bica #2

26 july 2010 - Lisbon. This year Elevador da Bica received new colours - I think it looks quite nice in these plastic silver plates. Wagon number 2 is climbing up, controlled by lady in yellow shirt. Bica's wagons are rather primitive in their construction... Wheel diameter is approximately 20, maybe 30 cm. The steering cable's diameter is almost the same as the thumb's diameter.

Carris Remodelado #578

14 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) - Travessa Sao Tome. Trams don't come much better than this - the famous Line 28 through Lisboa's Alfama district. The track repair gang must spend a lot of time pushing the rails back up the hill!

Carris Remodelado #573

22 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) - Rua Alianca Operaria. Lisboa tram line 18 runs well away from the main tourist areas, but has some very interesting and tight places. Here, a 'remodolado' heads away towards the city, passing #741 on driving school duty. The 700 series cars have only a trolley pole and are still in original condition, so are normally used only for non-passenger duties.

15 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) –depot/zajezdnia Pontinha. One three-car set of the original Metro cars has been nicely restored – these Type ML7 trains ran in normal service between 1959 and 2000. These cars remind me very much of the Metropolitan Line ‘A’ Stock trains in London. The Lisboa system is third-rail, 750v DC and runs on standard gauge.

15 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Carnide. A TWB debut? I find this amazing, because this is a big system (four lines) and Lisboa is a popular city. Had I known we had no photos, I would have taken many more. This is one of the suburban stations on the Blue Line – the art work above the platforms lights up as trains pass by. Everything on the metro is very clean and tidy.

Carris Remodelado #543

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Cemiterio dos Prazeres. A 500 Series ‘Remodelado’ and #735 stand together at the terminal loop, showing the differences. 500 Series cars are single ended, have a modern and much heavier truck, a pantograph and trolley pole and dummy offside doors that don’t open. The remaining un-rebuilt 700 Series trams have identical bodies (which were used to make the 500s) but are double ended and have a lighter Maley and Taunton British-built truck of traditional 1930s design.

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) - Calcada de Santo Andre. Chaos in the Alfama (2). Suddenly, a man appears from nowhere holding one of the little red/green signalling bats once used to control the two-way tram traffic along these very narrow streets – I have no idea who he is, or where he obtained the bat. I don’t think he works for Carris! For some years now, traffic signals have replaced the men who once stood on duty here.

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Calcada de Santo Andre. Chaos in the Alfama (1). Line 12 used to run in both directions here – just look at the problems facing trams climbing this very steep and narrow street. This is a 700 Class tram – not a Class 500 ‘Remodolado’ – so is double-ended and has only a trolley pole. The 500 series cars have been heavily rebuilt as single-enders, of course, from this original 700 type.

14 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Praca da Figueira. A late evening study of Remodolado car #564 at the Line 12 layover point, with a modern Siemens car arriving behind. There is unfortunately no passing track here, so trams are often held up waiting for a Line 12 car to depart.

Brill (Carris) #330

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Rua Bartholomeu Dias, Belem. Another rare outing for one of the few remaining four-axle cars in the Carris fleet, here seen on a special charter trip. There were once quite a few of these, but now they have mostly gone to museums. The vast building behind is the Jeronimos monastery. This picture didn’t go according to plan – three of us arranged to be picked up as soon as the tram reached us, but the driver didn’t see us, so we had to quickly find a taxi and say the immortal words “Follow that tram”.

20 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Praca do Comercio. Like me, this tram doesn’t get out much. It normally lives in the Carris museum and only comes out on very special occasions – and only when it isn’t raining (this isn’t so much for the tram’s benefit, but because the drivers don’t like getting wet!). It’s an original Brill summer car from 1902 and now the only one remaining.

Carris Remodelado #554

14 march 2010 - Lisboa (PT) – Rua do Voz do Operarie. A tram plunges (the only word for it) down into the Alfama district on the famous Line 28. It has already come down the line from Graca, a steep descent by any normal standards, and now simply drops off the end of the world – see the angle on the wall behind the post box (and it gets even steeper). These ‘Remodolado’ trams use old bodies mounted on new underframes and are very powerful – they just sail up these remarkable gradients like mountain goats.
