PCC #7002

7 july 2010 - Antwerpia (BE), De Vrierestraat. W Warszawie 50-lecie wagonów 13N świętowaliśmy rok temu, antwerpskie parówki obchodzą swój złoty jubileusz własnie teraz. 18.10.1960 dostarczono pierwsze dwa wagony (7000 i 01); widoczny na zdjęciu 7002 poczeka na swoją rocznicę do 3 listopada.

PCC #7067

7 july 2010 - Antwerpia (BE), Sint-Katelijnevest.

PCC #7034

7 july 2010 - Antwerpia (BE), Schijnpoortweg.

SachsenTram MGT6-1 #7206

7 july 2010 - Antwerpia (BE), Borsbeekbrug - przystanek Berchem Station. ;-)

SachsenTram MGT6-1 #7251

7 july 2010 - Antwerpia (BE), Mechelsesteenweg.

7 july 2010 - Antwerpia (BE), Blancefloerlaan.

SachsenTram MGT6-1 #7212

7 july 2010 - Antwerpia (BE), stacja Meir.

7 july 2010 - Antwerpia (BE), Gemeentestraat.

PCC #7138

7 july 2010 - Antwerpia (BE), Kipdorbrug.

PCC #7057

10 june 2009 - Antwerpen, Gemeentestraat.

SNCV Type S #9785

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Transport Museum, Groenenhoek. One of the superb 1958 Type S bogie trams of SNCV/NMVB. These were the final attempt by the vast Vicinal network to modernise their remaining electric lines, but closures continued and they soon had nowhere left to run. Fast and comfortable, they were more advanced than many trams still operating today.

SNCV Type S (Remorques) #19580

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Transport Museum, Groenenhoek. One of the Type S cars of the SNCV/NMVB – this is a rare trailer version. Never very common, they were built in the late 1950s to match the Type S motor cars, but the need for two-car trains was already beginning to disappear as lines closed down and motor car ownership increased. Note the oil tail lamp, still a feature on some services until the end.

Baume & Marpent Titanic works tram #10298

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Transport Museum, Groenenhoek. A works electric tram built in 1938 for the Vicinal lines around Antwerp on the chassis of a much older ‘Titanic’ motor car #9502 from 1919. This attractive blue and white colour scheme was used by the SNCV/NMVB for a short period, but later disappeared.

CGTA ballast tram #8821

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Transport Museum, Groenenhoek. Another Antwerpen city works car - this one is a very unusual ballast tipper wagon, designed to carry track materials which could then be shovelled from the open sides directly to where they were needed. This one was specially designed and wasn’t a later conversion.

CGTA works tram #8826

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Transport Museum, Groenenhoek. More photos from this very interesting museum, which holds many buses and trams from the former Antwerp city systems and the SNCV/NMVB lines which ran here. This was a standard passenger tram #430 of CGT Anvers until the replacement PCC cars came along. It then became a works shunter.

Jonckheere Transit 2000G #4963

10 june 2009 - Antwerpen, Camotstraat. A co to za cudak?

JJ Gilain Type 18 #1000

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek museum. A typical Vicinal steam tram of the 1920s, although this particular engine came from a sugar factory. Many of these SNCV Type 18 locomotives ran on the Belgian country lines before diesel trams took over.

SNCV/NMBS autorail tractor #ART 40

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek museum. A Vicinal ‘autorail-tracteur’ of 1933, built in the SNCV main workshops in Bruxelles. It ran as a passenger autorail until 1950, when it was converted as seen here. Unusually, it was fitted with conventional railway-style buffers for hauling freight wagons.

CGTA 2-axle tram #200

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek museum. This tram was the prototype for the original Antwerpen electric tramways of 1901 and looks very similar to the Herbrand cars being built around the same time for some Polish systems. Amazingly, it ran in passenger service until 1941.

2 axle Metallurgique tram #216

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek museum. This Gent city car is another very unusual design – open-sided with only little curtains to keep out some of the rain. The people of Gent must have been very strong in those days. I guess it only came out to work in the summer time, though.

TEG-AMN 3-axle tram #328

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek museum. One of the unusual three-axle Gent city trams, here displayed with a four-wheeled trailer. In the background are just a few of the many buses kept in this excellent museum.

PCC #7001

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Linkeroever, Blancefloerlaan. I couldn’t resist another view of such a nice tram – an elegant design that still looks good, almost fifty years later.

DAF TB164DS / Jonckheere #107102

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – museum Groenenhoek. Another SNCV bus with those strange wheels in the front bumper. I think they must be to protect the front of the bus – or if it hits someone, they are spun round to the side?

Van Hool A280 #262135

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – museum Groenenhoek. This was the first Antwerpen low-floor bus and now lives in the Groenenhoek museum. It was also the prototype Van Hool A280. Why it has such a huge number, I don’t know – I’m sure that MIVA didn’t have another 262,134 other buses…….

CGTA bogie tram #7386

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) - Draakstraat. A preserved Antwerpen city car in the city centre. Trams like this had seats only on the left side, with a huge space to the right for standing – I don’t know if they were designed like this, or if this was a later alteration. Anyway, just like ‘standee’ buses of today, but years earlier.

Leyland Worldmaster / Jonckheere TransCity #1031 16

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek. Maybe the first Leyland Worldmaster seen on these pages – I’m not sure. The Worldmaster, based on the Leyland Royal Tiger, was a very reliable long distance bus and was exported to many countries.

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek. More from the Antwerpen museum. This attractive 1957 bus came from local Antwerpen manufacturer Auto-Miesse and is fitted with a British Gardner engine. It originally worked with Flemish operator Autobus De Polder .

Brossel-Leyland A98 DAR/NMVB #10-0627

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek. This 1959 Brossel was built on an imported Leyland chassis and the bodywork was home-made by the NMVB (Vicinal) company at it’s Hasselt works.

Brossel A93 DAR/Jonckheere #10-1256

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek. This is a Brossel with Jonckheere bodywork and a Leyland engine. The Brossel company closed down in 1968.

Chevrolet GT30 / Jonckheere #10-655

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek. The logo on the front of this bus suggests that it was built by the Belgian firm of Bovy-Pipe, so probably has an English Leyland diesel engine – that’s all I can tell you. If so, this is the first one we have pictured here. Any ideas?

Chevrolet GT30 / Jonckheere #10-655

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Groenenhoek. First TWB pictures from the tram and bus museum in Antwerpen, which houses a large collection of rare and unusual buses. Here are just four of the 1950s/1960s ones – many more are lined up to the right. These buses all appear the same, but if you look closely, you’ll see they are all slightly different. I can’t identify them all – perhaps you can?

PCC #7017

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – zajezdnia/depot Punt aan de Lijn. A standard Antwerpen PCC that has not been modified for subway-surface work. A number of these are still in use on the quieter routes, but will be replaced by low-floor Hermelijn cars over the next few years. Ride them while you can!

PCC #7158

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – zajezdnia/depot Punt aan de Lijn. In the spacious new depot and workshops, a line of refurbished subway-surface PCCS await their next duties. Note the different appearance from the classic PCC, like those shown earlier.

PCC #7001

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Linkeroever. PCC #7001 was part of the original 1960 delivery and is still available for normal duties, although it is nicely kept in the original Antwerpen colour scheme.

SachsenTram MGT6-1 #7269

11 june 2009 - Antwerpen (BE) – Zwijndrecht. Line 3 is now worked exclusively by the new Hermelijn low-floor cars like 7269, shown here at the new western terminus. The Antwerpen tramway is still expanding, with more new extensions planned. Unfortunately, they don’t make it easy for enthusiasts, as their new trams have really tiny fleet numbers - very hard to read from a distance!

PCC #2000

11 june 2009 - Handel. De Lijn still operates a large PCC fleet in Antwerpen, mostly rebuilt for service on the subway-surface routes of the pre-metro, where they often run in pairs. The prototype car #2000 of 1960 (formerly #7000) is now a museum car and does not run in normal service. It’s seen here at one of the city centre subway stations.

SachsenTram MGT6-1 #7227

FN T36 / ACEC #45

11 june 2009 - Anvers/Antwerpen (BE) – zajezdnia/stelplaats Punt aan de Lijn. In the Antwerp workshops is this Type T36 trolleybus of 1938. In fact, no actual Antwerp trolleys have survived and this was originally #453 from the Liege system. The last trolleybuses ran in Antwerp in 1964 (and this wasn’t one of them).
