29 september 2008 - Sibiu (RO) – depou/zajezdnia. The last two remaining trolleybus lines in Sibiu closed last weekend and were replaced by buses. The only electric transport that now survives iin this part of Romania is the Rasinari tram and a few trolleys in the nearby city of Medias. I guess that all the old Swiss trolleybuses that came to Sibiu will now be scrapped. Farewell.

30 september 2008 - Sibiu (RO) – Rasinari. A picture with a story – maybe someone would like to translate for me? A few moments before, this woman and child were riding a loaded farm cart with her husband. The horses were frightened by the tram and suddenly ran away, completely out of control, with her husband (who lost his hat) still on the cart and trying hard to stop them. When the man finally got the cart under control again, nearly 1km further down the road, she refused to ride any further, so now she is walking home with the child whilst the cart goes on ahead. It could have been a very nasty accident if the cart had overturned (which looked very likely). We watched from the tram, thinking someone would get killed.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu (RO) – depou/zajezdnia. The other one of the two serviceable, ex-Geneve trailer cars has been converted into a café tram, thankfully without spoiling the outside view. Hermannstadt is the old German name for Sibiu, of course, and quite a few German tourists go there, but sadly not to ride the tram – the line is tucked away at the edge of town, so probably 95% of tourists don’t even know it’s there.

29 september 2008 - Sibiu (RO) – Muzeul Traditionale. A short way along the tram line from Sibiu is this popular ‘skansen’ or folk museum, which receives many visitors. They all seem to travel by bus, though, as the trolleybus wires stop short of here and the tram line doesn’t go into the centre of the city – a real wasted opportunity.

Two trams and two trailers are in working order – but only one solo tram is needed for the few journeys the line makes. Note the life-sized ‘dummies’ inside this trailer - I have no idea why they are there!

Some pictures today of the wonderful Sibiu to Rasinari tram, which I don’t think will last much longer, as it must lose money and a modern, low-floor bus travels the same route every hour (and goes much further into Sibiu city) - the tram only runs a few times a day. In Rasinari, the line just ends here at a reversing triangle in the centre of the village (it never went any further).

The two remaining trolleybus routes in Sibiu are cut to run hourly and half-hourly from today and will CLOSE in November, so if you want to see them, GO VERY SOON! I can’t believe that the wonderful Rasinari tram will survive, either – why keep the electricity switched on just for this? So we must fear the worst, I’m afraid. My pictures today are a celebration of Sibiu trolleybuses. Ex-Biel #221 is seen here in the city centre.

"Tramvaj/2" (tak w rozkładzie oznaczana jest druga kolejność na jedynej linii tramwajowej w Sibiu) wykonuje ostatni kurs na pierwszej części "przerywanej". Po dojechaniu do Sibiu zjedzie do zajezdni. Tym samym w mieście przestaną kursować tramwaje, bowiem całodzienny "tramvaj/1" obsługiwany był tego dnia MAZem.

1 september 2008 - Sibiu, Cimitir. Weteran z Genewy odstawiony na trójkącie torowym na początku linii podmiejskiej z Sibiu do Rasinari. Niestety, w pierwszy dzień szkoły mogliśmy sobie na niego tylko popatrzeć, bo nie wyglądał jakby ktoś go stąd ruszał. Według naklejonego na szybie rozkładu powinien akurat wracać z Rasinari. Cóż, jest tu po co wrócić.

The Rasinari village bus runs every hour and takes less than half the time, plus it gives a warm and comfortable ride right into the city centre, which doesn’t give the tram any hope of competing (although the same company runs both). It seems inevitable that this idyllic tramway won’t survive much longer – maybe just until something breaks down?

29 september 2008 - Sibiu, Romania. The white ex-Geneve car at a passing loop with an evening Rasinari trip. As the line normally operates on the ‘one engine in steam’ principle, these loops are not often needed. The cart operates in the same way - one engine in steam :-)
