19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - el Central: You can buy absolutely anything in these markets - I expect they would even sell you the tram if you wanted (or at least they would try!). One of these Duewags has already gone back to Copenhagen for the Danish tram museum and there are plans to take back another when Alexandria has finished with them, although after almost sixty years of service, that day still seems to be quite a long way in the future.

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - el Central: Here is the tramway buffet or restaurant in central Alexandria - some buckets placed between the tracks and men selling cups of water to passengers in a passing tram, which have to move so slowly here that there is plenty of time to pour the drink and sell it through the tram window before it moves on. Lovely "fresh" water, straight out of the nearby River Nile, no doubt!

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - el Central: Some pictures today around the central railway station in Alexandria, a crazy place of people and market stalls where trams have to fight their way along the narrow, congested streets. Here is Duewag GT6 #803, one of the large fleet of 97 cars, built in the early 1960s for Copenhagen, which have an extremely hard life here but which appear almost indestructable.

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Depot Karmouz: Perhaps a not very exciting subject for a photo, but this is actually an interesting survivor - the chassis frame of an old tram from the Alexandria interurban line, now in use as a flat wagon or lorka at the Karmouz depot of the city tramways. This was once a similar car to the historic single deck tram #601 which has been retained for special service at Mustafa Kamel depot on the Ramleh line.

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - One of the fleet of almost one hundred Deuwag GT6 trams that came here from Copenhagen when the system there closed. These trams have given very good service in the demanding conditions of Alexandria city and are still kept on the road with limited resources in the APTA workshops. For instance, just about every Duewag in the fleet now has a different window arrangement, using parts from the scrap bin. Here, #855 carries a typically heavy load on what is, at many places, quite dreadful track which would derail a more modern and less forgiving tram.

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Midan el Tahrir: Back on the Alexandria city lines, a non-pantograph equipped Kinki Sharyo tram tries to make progress across Tahrir Square with the Mediterranean Sea in the background. The traffic is murderous in the city, making you wonder how long the trams can continue - apart from the Ramleh interurban lines, this is entirely a street-running system, with narrow and awkward street layouts. Priority to allow the trams to go first is unheard of, so they must try to push their way through, but the average Egyptian driver is a mad lunatic....

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Mustafa Kamel tramway depot: I wonder just where to start in describing this truly amazing works car of the Ramleh interurban lines? Based on the body of a very old four-wheel tram with open platforms, it has been extended to fit onto a chassis which appers to have come from a bogie double-decker. Everything possible has then been added, so the car is equipped for anything it is likely to encounter, including an upstairs balcony where you can sit back with a glass of cold beer. It looks rather like those trick cars that clowns have at the circus - one bang and the whole thing falls apart!

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Mustafa Kamel tramway depot: The city and interurban networks in Aleaxandria have separate depots and colour schemes. Here at Mustafa Kamel depot, double deck car #224 is parked with its train in the yard, whilst a city single deck car goes past in the background, providing one of the through services which reach this far from the city centre, meaning passengers don`t have to change trams to get here. The double deck car, where there is one, is always at the city end of the three-car train.

20 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Ramleh tram station: The blue trams of Alexandria run exclusively on the interurban tracks through the northern suburbs. These trams are permanently formed into three car trains, including several which have these big, motored, double deck trailer cars. Apart from Hong Kong, this is now the only place which runs double deck trams in regular service. The tram nearest the front of a train is always reserved for ladies only, meaning that male enthusiasts have to wait for a ride until the train turns round to continue its journey!

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Midan el Tahrir: Another two-car tram train heading along one of the main streets towards the terminus of the largely separate interurban tramway which connects the city to its northern suburbs. The cars on this part of the system all use pantographs for current collection, so some of the city trams, like #1102 shown here, are equipped with both pantographs and trolley poles, allowing them to travel onto both sections in order to provide a `through` service.

21 february 2010 - Egypt, Alexandria - Midal el Tahrir: Despite the crazy Egyptian traffic, the coastal city and port of Alexandria retains its faith in tramways and now has the only operating system in the country, with more replacement cars now arriving from Germany. Here, a two-car train of Kinki Sharyo trams does battle with all kinds of other vehicles, all competing for any road space they can get. The raised observation tower on the corner is interesting - traffic control? I don`t think so....! Note that this batch of trams are equipped only with trolley poles - the significance of this is explained in my next photo.

11 january 2012 - Alexandria (Egipt), ulica Al Askandar Al Akbar. Linia 861. Najwyraźniej egipska cenzura internetu objęła również komunikację miejską, bowiem nigdzie w sieci nie sposób znaleźć informacji o tym pojeździe. Jedyne co udało się ustalić, to że silnik jest na gaz.

11 january 2012 - Alexandria (Egipt), Al Askandar Al Akbar. Fotografowanie tramwajów w centrum egpiskiego miasta to loteria. Tym razem los był w miarę litościwy - nie wjechał samochód, nie wszedł pieszy, a do wykonania zdjęcia nie trzeba było wchodzić do najgłębszego miejsca kałuży.

11 january 2012 - Alexandria (Egipt), Al Askandar Al Akbar. W tym miejscu w lewo odłączał się kiedyś krótki łącznik wiodący przez główny miejski plac do pozostałej części sieci. Niestety po jego likwidacji układ linii tramwajowych w centrum zrobił się mocno kulawy, co w połączeniu z niskimi częstotliwościami czyni z tramwaju uciążliwą ciekawostkę przyrodniczą.

11 january 2012 - Aleksandria, Sidi Gabir. W przeciwieństwie do miejskiej części sieci (pałąkowej) część w dzielnicy Ramleh sprawia bardzo dobre wrażenie. Spora część wozów poddana została naprawom i wyglądają europejsko (widać da się). Trójskład udaje się do centrum, na przeciwnym torze widać piętrusa. Piętrowe są tylko wagony sterownicze (po jednym w składzie). Większość z nas marzy pewnie o tym, żeby przejechać się takim tramwajem na przednim siedzeniu górnego pokładu... Dla większości z nas to nie jest osiągalne - pierwszy wagon w składzie zarezerwowany jest dla kobiet. Dobrze, że na tej sieci nie ma pętli i mężczyźni mogą skorzystać z piętrusa, kiedy staje się on ostatnim wozem składu.

11 january 2012 - Aleksandria, plac dworcowy. To zdjęcie kosztowało mnie wpadnięcie po kostkę w błoto. W sumie to atrakcja, bo deszcz w Aleksandrii to podobno rzadkie zjawisko. Dziwie się, jak to jest, że pasażerowie nie kradną nic z tych kramów.

11 january 2012 - Aleksandria. Aleksandria nie jest ogromnym miastem - przejazd kilku km tramwajem potrafi jednak zająć dwie godziny... Na zdjęciu widać drogę z 4 pasami ruchu, na której rozłożył się "wolny handel". Gorzej jak miejsce wolnego handlu zajmują jadące w każdą możliwą stronę samochody. Na fragmencie szóstki jeżdżą dwukierunkowe Ganze - muszą, bo cześć linii jest nieprzejezdna - zawalił się dom.

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Masr. A Düwag car heads a long line of similar trams through the central market. These trams have had a very long and hard life, but are still being renovated (and often completely rebuilt) in the company’s workshops. Of the original 100 cars brought here when the Copenhagen system closed in 1968, no less than 97 are still active. No two trams are now exactly the same.

21 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt - Midan el Tahrir. A few of the Alexandria Kinki Sharyo trams are dual-equipped with both pantograph and trolley pole, as seen here, so they can run through the city (trolley pole) and out on the Ramleh interurban, by changing current collectors at the Ramleh line terminus. This allows people from the city to travel across the system boundary by paying just one fare.

19 february 2010 - Alexandria, Egypt – Mustafa Kamel. One of the small batch of double-deck trailers used on the Ramleh interurban – one of the only three places where double deck trams can now be found in normal service (and, of these, Blackpool is now doubtful until it is seen how their new fleet of trams is employed). The majestic Ramleh double-deckers are always used in driving trailer-motor-driving trailer sets, with one double-decker facing towards Alexandria, as is the case here, where two separate routes into the city meet. As this car is at the front of the set, it is reserved for women passengers.
